UN TYPE APPROVED BOXES AND PACKAGING FOR HAZMAT AND DANGEROUS GOODS

The logistics and transport of hazardous substances requires the use of safe and approved packaging, as any personal injury or material damage they may cause would be the direct responsibility of the manufacturer or sender.

Tecnisample’s line of containers and packaging for the transport of dangerous goods complies with all the specifications and requirements that the UN type approval has imposed for the transport and sale of dangerous substances.

What is UN type approval?

UN type approval ensures that a packaging provides the necessary conditions for the safe storage of hazardous substances.
It is valid for 5 years and implies that these containers must comply with certain design and packaging standards, according to the guidelines of the quality management programme controlled by the approval body, such as chemical compatibility with the product, the temperature it can withstand in good condition, or physical resistance, among others.

Packaging and regulations: What requirements must be met?

For a packaging to be valid, it must include the following information:

  • Material code
  • Manufacturer’s details
  • Year of manufacture
  • Country
  • Approval number and approval authority
  • Packaging group
  • Test pressure
  • Symbol for UN-tested packages, in compliance with all established safety measures.

Approved packages must also include a label where all this information remains visible.

Failure to comply with UN packaging requirements or incomplete labelling could result in the goods being banned from sale or circulation at the point of destination.

In addition, packaging of hazardous substances must pass stacking and drop tests, among others, and comply with the requirements imposed in relation to the substance it contains, quantity, weight, etc.

All these specifications and regulations on approved packaging are contained in the ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods).

  • Annex A of the document includes all the actions to be carried out in relation to packaging before transporting dangerous goods and distributing them, such as the classification of the goods, the generation of the relevant documentation, checks prior to the shipment of the goods, etc.
  • Annex B, on the other hand, includes all the information relating to transport, the type of vehicle that will transport the goods, the equipment, the choice of driver, etc.

These annexes are updated every two years, so all the information on UN-approved packaging and the transport of hazardous substances is kept up to date and available on the internet.

The ADR establishes 13 categories for classifying dangerous goods, grouped according to their level of risk:

  • GROUP I (X), Very Dangerous Goods.
  • GROUP II (Y), Medium Dangerous Goods.
  • GROUP III (Z), Substances of lesser danger.

The RID, IMDG, IATA and ICAO regulations contain the necessary information for approved packaging with regard to the transport of dangerous goods by sea, air and rail.
